Peguyangan Waterfall is a group of tiny falls and natural pools at the bottom of some cliffs in Nusa Penida, and you reach it by climbing down hundreds of steps on a bright blue stairway.
How on earth did they make a stairway here? And why? I donβt know. But if you like sketchy, remote hikes with steep paths to get your adrenaline going, this one is for you!
Itβs one of the craziest hikes in Bali, and the views of the cliffs are just amazing. This travel guide will explain how to get to the Guyangan Waterfall, and everything you need to know before you go!
Where To Stay In Nusa Penida
Peguyangan Waterfall Hike
Like most hikes in Nusa Penida, the trek down to Peguyangan Waterfall starts from the top of a big limestone cliff on the coast.
Itβs not too tough going down, and only takes about 30 minutes, but the climb back to the top is steep and strenuous. Youβll climb down a bright blue stairway until you reach an old Hindu temple at the bottom of the cliffs.
The first two sets of blue stairs are solid metal, and you get some incredible views of the Penida coastline along the way. In the distance, you can see the triangular boulder at Batu Siha Beach.
The final blue stairs at Peguyangan are made of wood and they hang directly over the ocean, with waves crashing on the rocks below.
Underneath the main stairway, you can even see the remains of an old stairway that broke and fell before the current one was made.
The drop-offs here are lethal, and the condition of the stairs at some points is questionable. Proceed at your own risk!
If youβre over 100 kilos (220 lb), I probably wouldnβt do this hike, for safety reasons. Just my opinion, but keep in mind the wooden stairs were built for locals who weigh less than 70 kilos (150 lb) and the place hasnβt been maintained in years.
I did this hike for the first time in 2017 with a soggy pair of sandals, and majorly regretted it. My feet were slipping on the stairs, and I thought I was going to slide through one of the giant gaps between the stairs.
In other words, if you take a dip in the pool at the bottom, try to keep your footwear dry for the hike back up the stairs. It can make a big difference.
We came back and did the hike again in 2021 as a couple, and it didnβt seem quite as bad as I remembered. Just keep 3 points of contact and you should be okay.
Side note: If you love the views on this hike, you might want to check out Waterfall Inn, a small scenic hotel at the top of the cliffs and just a stoneβs throw from the entrance to Peguyangan.
Peguyangan Natural Pool
At the bottom of Peguyangan cliff, thereβs a Hindu temple and a few waterfalls and pools where you can swim and cool off before hiking back to the top.
The pools are actually man-made, but they look natural. The ocean views make it feel a bit like an infinity pool.
Entrance Fees
FREE as of 2021. Thereβs no entrance fee.
Since Peguyangan is a temple, you do have to wear a sarong to enter, but these can be rented from the parking area for 15k Rupiah (~$1 USD) or you can bring your own for free.
How To Get To Peguyangan Waterfall
Peguyangan Waterfall is on the southwest side of Nusa Penida island.
Itβs accessible by car or scooter, about 1 hour drive from the Sampalan docks or accommodation in northern Penida. The road here is a bit rough, so take it easy.
