Tembeling Beach And Forest: Natural Pool In Nusa Penida Bali

by David & Intan

The Tembeling beach and forest is a hidden spot tucked away in the cliffs on Nusa Penida’s west coast, with a natural pool and small waterfall to enjoy.

My favorite feature of this beach is the awesome sea cave that opens up to a view of the huge cliffs on the coast, but this place is also becoming popular for the Tembeling natural pool, which you can take a dip in and relax.

The access to this beach is a bit tricky, but it’s one of our favorite spots in Bali! This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!

Where To Stay In Nusa Penida

Tembeling Beach And Forest

Tembeling beach sits at the bottom of a long, secluded ravine in the jungle.

From the parking area, it’s a steep descent with no car access, so you can either hike down on foot or take a motorbike on the narrow rocky trail.

The locals are friendly and they can also take you down and back up on their motorbikes for 50k IDR (~$3) roundtrip, per person.

I would not at all recommend doing a motorbike on this trail unless you’re feeling crazy. It’s extremely steep and rocky, with very little room for error. Hopefully a better trail will be made soon!

In the meantime, the only alternative is to hike down, and this can take up to an hour each way. It’s a very steep hike on the way back, so bring plenty of water!

Tembeling Natural Pool & Waterfall

As you hike through the jungle, you’ll pass some old Balinese shrines and a greenish natural pool along the way.

Keep going, because there’s a much better pool and small waterfall at the bottom with crystal clear water!

The Tembeling natural pool sits on the edge of the ocean and almost looks like an infinity pool.

Tembeling Beach & Cave

At the bottom of the ravine, there’s a nice white sand beach at Tembeling with some swing sets to chill on.

If you walk 25 meters to the west there’s also a big sea cave with hundreds of rock cairns and an epic view of the white cliffs above you.

If you have a drone, this is a great place to launch from and get some amazing shots of the cliffs!

Entrance Fees

FREE as of 2020.

There’s no entrance fee or parking fee at Tembeling natural pool.

How To Get There

Tembeling beach and forest is located on the southwest side of Nusa Penida island.

It’s accessible by car or scooter, about 1 hour drive from the main docks and accommodation in northern Penida.

Be very careful if you go by scooter because the last part of the rocky trail to Tembeling is one of the worst sections of road in Penida, and may be dangerous in some spots if you don’t take it slow!

Nusa Penida Private Driver

If you want to explore Nusa Penida in the comfort and safety of a van with a driver, my top recommendation would be GetYourGuide.

They offer a full day of driving and sightseeing in Penida (up to 8 hours) for 1-5 passengers. This tour includes the whole van + driver + petrol.

We've used GetYourGuide for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they're great! Highly recommended.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at Saren Villa on the north coast of Nusa Penida, and paid 240k Rupiah ($15 USD) for a private double room with cold A/C, hot shower, and good WiFi.

This is one of the cheapest options in Penida, and it's in a great location near the best restaurants! We were happy.

Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
